In Memoriam

No words describe the love I feel for my country. My grandfather fought in WWII at Pearl Harbor with the Coast Guard. My father served in the ROTC during college. My brother and brother-in-law currently serve in the Coast Guard. While none have been asked to give their lives for this country, each of them gladly would.

In David McCullough's book 1776 he writes, "The year 1776, celebrated as the birth year of the nation and for the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was for those who carried the fight for independence forward a year of all-too-few victories, of sustained suffering, disease, hunger, desertion, cowardice, disillusionment, defeat, terrible discouragement, and fear, as they would never forget, but also of phenomenal courage and bedrock devotion to country, and that, too, they would never forget."

I feel this devotion and loyalty to freedom intensely as I walk through Arlington National Cemetery. I only wish my father could have been there with me, as it is he who taught me to honor my country and those who serve.

This was beautiful! I'm so, so happy and grateful that our Heather married into such a wonderful family and that her babies can carry on such important traditions passed on by such a thoughtful family! I love getting to know all of you better through the miracle of blog "lurking":)
